With lighting this show, my goal was to create an environment that supported the show’s different worlds of the living world and the underworld. I began this design by researching how I could create an emotional journey of the characters and show the difference between the realms of the living world and the underworld. Throughout the process, I collaborated closely with the director and scenic team to understand the pacing and flow of each scene. I used warmer natural tones for the living world and contrasted them with sharper tones for the underworld. Transitions were especially important for this show. I designed shifts in color and intensity to act as the characters themselves while also showing where they are in the show. Additionally, I made intentional use of shadow and isolation, allowing the empty space and darkness to speak when words went away. My vision was to ensure the lighting felt integral to the storytelling rather than just decorative. By blending atmosphere with precision, I aimed to make the audience feel as though they were journeying alongside Orpheus and Eurydice.
