As the Lighting Designers for Cinderella in Concert, our primary goal was to craft a visual world that enhanced the story and immersed the audience into the show. The first part of the design process involved a thorough analysis of the script, identifying key moments where lighting could underscore the emotional tone. This analysis led to many of the color and atmospheric decisions made for the show. One of the most intricate parts of the design process was developing the light plot. Using Vectorworks Spotlight, we drafted a plan detailing the positioning of each fixture, ensuring full stage coverage and seamless transitions between scenes. This technical groundwork was crucial for integrating the lighting with the large platforms used for the orchestra. The final stages of the design process were building the lighting rig and programming the show. When it came to programming the show, we programmed in a 3D visualizer. This allowed for us to have the show mostly complete before the first day of tech and then only making minimal changes from there during rehearsals. When it comes to the final design, we were able to create intentional color palettes that capture the mood and set each scene effectively. By assigning different tones to individual characters, we maintained visual consistency that helps keep the audience engaged with the storyline. Lighting played a critical role in communicating a character’s emotional separation from others and drawing the audience’s focus to a specific part of the stage. These choices guide the audience’s understanding of each character’s development and interaction with their environment. In addition to color, we used gobos to shape the mood within individual scenes. For moments with higher energy or commotion, we employed sharper, more dynamic lighting patterns, while quieter scenes called for softer, subtler effects. Our lighting choices were designed to reflect not only the energy of the scene but also the characters’ emotions and motivations. To further enhance the visual experience, we used low-lying fog during specific scenes. The fog allowed actors to move through a misty environment, adding an element of discovery and mystique. This effect was especially effective in scenes that called for a dreamlike feeling on stage. Haze was also introduced to amplify certain lighting effects, adding depth and movement to the concert atmosphere. By skillfully combining color, texture, and atmospherics, we aimed to deepen the audience’s connection to the characters and their experiences, bringing Cinderella in Concert to life in a visually compelling way.
