The concept behind the lighting design for Alice in Wonderland was to start with neutral colors before Alice enters Wonderland. Once she travels through the rabbit hole, the lighting transforms into an immersive and magical world. Another goal of the design was to make the audience feel as if they are already in Wonderland as soon as they enter the theater. Achieving this goal required strategic placement of lighting fixtures and use of haze. This combined created a sense of magic before the show even began. Before any fixtures were hung, this process began with initial concepts. The idea of using atmospheric effects throughout the show was central from the start. The primary goal was to add dimension to the lighting while also being able to create smokescreens for characters to magically disappear. In conclusion, all of the lighting elements came together successfully because of thorough planning and communication across departments.
